Konkrete Frauen: Neue Räume /
Concrete Women: New Spaces

Around 100 years ago, Theo van Doesburg launched ‘Concrete Art’ with his manifesto - with reduced colours, clear forms and no individual signature. But what does Concrete Art mean in today's context and how do contemporary artists deal with it?

As part of Hellweg Konkret III, the Ahlen Art Museum presented 20 international female artists who explored this art movement in different ways. The exhibition expanded the concept of concrete art and focussed on space-creating qualities in painting, sculpture, installation and textile art. At the same time, it created visibility for female positions that were still underrepresented in the art world.

The diverse interplay of colours, forms and materials invited visitors to make new discoveries. The show was complemented by a cabinet exhibition with works from the Speth-Lage Collection, which was donated to the museum in 2023.
